I do however hold a beef against people who use their religion like a giant self-righteous hitting stick. We have a site FAQ. It isn’t there to look pretty. We try and answer as many of your questions as we can so that if you message for help, we aren’t spending our, and your, valuable time explaining who we are and what we stand for.
*I*, Gehenna, yes that’s G-E-H-E-N-N-A, really do not want to spend my work and email time explaining the 20+ years of pop culture and arcane religious references behind the name, that hold a deep enough meaning for me to use it as my online alias. It is there in a simplified form on the FAQ.

If you don’t like our vibe, then don’t read us and don’t buy from us. Simple. We debated long and had a drink or two.. hard about how we should represent ourselves on our site. Did we want to be businesslike? HELL no!

Who we are is important to us. Our testimonials often mention that we come across as people our clients can relate to. I am not willing to compromise my identity for the sake of a sale, nor will I spend hours of back-and-forthing explaining myself to people who cannot be bothered to understand their own religion.

I recently posted an unmoderated blog comment denouncing us as clowns and scammers (written by someone perturbed by my choice of name) on my personal facebook page.

SMcB–A lot of people miss the one, main positive of the meaning of Gehenna – Gehenna symbolizes the process of PURIFICATION through fire (whether that be energetic fire, violet flame, etc) People like him just google the word and pick the first few descriptions without actually taking the time to read and understand.

SMcB–Hell yeah! Or should I say Gehenna yeah LOL – You can find a few sources for this if you google Gehenna and Purification but there will always be some dork who blocks out the rest and goes straight for for the “hell and damnation” meaning.

LtG–He probably knows SO little about his own religion that he doesn’t realize gehenna is a REAL place outside Jerusalem and there IS NO HELL. Jews don’t acknowledge one, nor do they acknowledge any devil character.

Discernment and intuition are two of the most useful traits we can possess. The two are easily confused, but understanding what they both are, and how to cultivate them deliberately, is crucial for any seeker of truth and self realization. For that matter, it’s crucial for anyone who wants to be a good judge of character in others, and who wants a healthy navigation system for sailing the sea of information we’re bombarded with on a daily basis.

When you begin (or find yourself suddenly plonked onto) a spiritual path, you will encounter a wide range of ideas, and it would probably be fair to say that 1. the vast majority of them are sketchy at best and toxic at worst, and 2. most of it will be presenting itself as “The Truth.” It is also common for spiritual seekers to gain sensitivity, either through deliberate practice or spontaneous opening of latent abilities, which opens them up to contact from various nonphysical energies, influences and entities. As I’ve discussed previously, not all of these entities are going to have your best interest in mind. Much like people, nonphysical entities are a pretty diverse bunch, running the spectrum from dangerous adversaries to valuable allies, to those who mean no real harm but can still divert your path with their craving for attention. Entities with shady intentions posing as divine figures is also one of the oldest tricks in the book. So how do we tell the difference between a true spiritual ally, and the hissing lizard-creature in the Virgin Mary mask that may not be who it says it is? Let’s get acquainted with the two friends who will let ya know, once you know how to work with them.

What is Discernment?

Discernment is the process by which we evaluate incoming information and either accept it as it is and incorporate it into our personal “operating system,” revise it, or reject it. This is mostly a mental sorting process, which measures new information against what we already hold, and uses the support of our emotional center to let us know what “feels right” vs. not. Using our discernment causes us to ask: is this information logically consistent? Does it fit with what I already know to be true? The trick with that second question though, is not to confuse “knowns” with “beliefs.” A belief can and should be challenged, and changed, in the face of new information — a known is what is left after all beliefs are stripped away.

In an ideal world, the disciplines of logic and critical thinking would be taught in schools as a basic skill… but unfortunately, in this world, that would conflict with the purpose that schools were designed for to begin with. Nonetheless, doing some study on subjects like logic, and recognizing logical fallacies, can be very helpful here. I did once take a college course on it which, while mind numbingly tedious at times (those times being the sections that involved proofs in the form of math equations *groan*) it was one of the most valuable classes I ever took, and I’d highly recommend it if you’re currently at a school that offers it. If not, Google and/or your local library are your friends.

At this point I should say that I realize there’s a tendency in many spiritual circles to react against the over-reliance on logic in other fields, and shy away from it entirely. I would also be the first to tell you that not all spiritual experiences are logical. Where logic does (or should) come into play, is evaluating the information we gain from our most abstract, wild experiences; our interpretations of those experiences, and where we choose to go from there. While there are no absolutes, information and interpretations that are logically consistent are generally more likely to be closer to the truth than that which is full of holes and contradictions. This gives us a framework for keeping ourselves grounded, even while having experiences that will “blow your mind, man.”

The usual approach to cultivating discernment is through hard life experience; sheer trial and error. You have some good experiences, and you get knocked around enough times, so you start getting some idea of how to increase the former and decrease the latter. The problem is that most people have no real system by which to process and organize the information that makes up their worldview, and don’t bother to consciously evaluate what’s already there, much less what new information is permitted to come onboard. This leaves us with a worldview that is scattered, disorganized, full of contradictions and epic leaps in logic. It is most often founded upon the ideas that were socialized into us from parents, religion and society about what is “good” and “bad.” Even those who have begun questioning their programming are left with the dilemma of what standard to measure the programming against. With a mind full of conflicting ideas, trying to find its way in a world to match, how do we begin to chart our own course? I’ll tell you how I did it, but first I’d like to talk about the faithful companion of discerment: intuition.

What is Intuition?

Intuition is in a sense, the opposite yet complimentary process. There’s no sorting or even much thinking involved here; our intuition provides an immediate sense of “knowing” about the truth of a given situation or piece of info; it immediately gives us a sense of What Is. This process takes place mostly in the emotional processing center of the navel chakra; the source of “gut feelings.” Intuition uses the support of the conscious mind in that we have to be aware enough of what our feelings are telling us, to act on them.

After finding themselves in a range of sticky, screwed up situations, many people claim that they either don’t have intuition, or that theirs is “broken.” I’m here to save you a lot of trouble by telling you that your intuition is always functioning perfectly, exactly as it should. “But Horse!” you might say, after (hopefully) setting aside the urge to pop me one, “how can you say this, if I keep ending up in situations that aren’t good for me?”

I say this because your intuition, as the more unconscious part of your navigation system, is always guiding you exactly where it’s told to. Intuition simply tells you What Is — but it’s your personal collection of information, programming and old buried emotional material that you’ve got stored in your subconscious mind and energy centers, that determine how you respond to its signals, or whether you even recognize them at all. Refer back to what I said above about holding a scattered, disorganized worldview, and the picture becomes more clear. Whatever direction your entire mental, energetic, emotional and subconscious systems are most oriented in, is what your intuition will guide you toward. More likely, if your system is full of all sorts of mutually contradictory programming, intuition will seem harder to spot… not because it isn’t there, but because it’s leading you erratically in all directions, and you have to figure out and calibrate which of those directions you actually prefer in order to hone your relationship with your own senses. If, to use a common example, you were raised with a version of Christianity that taught you that you’re a sinful being who deserves to suffer, your intuition says “right boss!” (quite possibly in the Bronx accent I’m hearing in my head), iceberg suffering, dead ahead!”

Most people are stronger in either intuition or discernment, and sometimes there’s a tendency to downplay the weaker area. Women are often said to be better with intuition, while men are assumed to be more proficient in logic. In reality there is nothing inherent in either gender that makes them automatically better in either area; this has more to do with the fact that logic is a more mental process, intuition is more emotional, and our cultural conditioning categorizes men and women into the two separately. I started out much more logical than intuitive, but once I got rid of everything that was interfering with my intuition, and figured out how to use it, it began to feel just as natural. Among people who are better at logical discernment, intuition is often thought to be too “warm and fuzzy,” and among the intuitively gifted, logic is viewed as “cold.” It’s natural to gravitate toward what we’re already good at, but the best use of these two skills are as a complimentary, balanced whole. After all, information can be logically valid, while not being beneficial to incorporate in our daily lives, and conversely, something might feel right, but on closer inspection, not lead us in a direction we would want to go. Logic gives intuition a framework within which to focus itself; intuition provides our logic with a sense of direction.

In order to discern or intuit the nature of any person, entity, information or situation, you first have to be intimately familiar with YOUR nature. Who are you? What are your values? By what set of standards do you measure what’s good for you vs. what isn’t? You’re already doing this, probably largely unconsciously, but you’re doing so with a set of standards that you’ve been programmed with over the course of your lifetime, rather than ones you’ve chosen deliberately. When you have a clear sense of self, things that conflict with it will naturally begin to feel very dissonant, and things that synch up with your internal compass will feel comfortable and “right.” So how do we change our programming and begin choosing values that are truly our own?

Meet the Bouncer

There is a part of the subconscious mind I call The Bouncer, because it fulfills a function similar to a person with that job – it’s the part of you that operates at the border between the conscious and subconscious, and decides which information passes the threshold. The information that gets through becomes your personal programming, and holds a degree of influence over your experience and worldview from that point forward. Additionally, in contradiction with most of the “law of attraction” material I’ve ever read, I’ve found that simply changing a belief on the surface; deciding not to believe it anymore; doesn’t necessarily alter the influence it’s having over your life. When a piece of information gets past the bouncer, you’ve basically installed it as mental software. If you’ve reinforced it in various ways over time, it will be buried deep. Changing your conscious beliefs and actions is a bit like deleting a shortcut from your computer’s desktop – but if you want the program fully gone, you still have to uninstall it. Changing beliefs on the surface will condition the subconscious mind eventually, in an indirect way, but there are ways that are much more efficient.

Fortunately, working with your bouncer doesn’t require any fancy hypnosis techniques or deep trance that most people typically associate with subconscious work (although reading up on self hypnosis and familiarizing yourself with the methodology wouldn’t hurt). He operates close to the surface, but can “run errands” at deeper levels if you ask him to, so working with him doesn’t require much more effort than getting relaxed, addressing him directly and telling him what you want to achieve. I’ve even named mine and developed a specific way that I address him, which means that at this point he’s only taking information from me and sources that are aligned with my values, rather than absorbing it willy-nilly. If you realize that a belief or piece of information you’ve been hanging onto is limiting or unhealthy, simply ask your bouncer to remove it and all its influence from your system at all levels, and if you wish, replace it with something else. I assume most of my readers probably know themselves at least well enough that they can get a good start on sifting through their internal archives. However, if we take into account that the packages of information offered by all religions, politicians, societal institutions and especially modern advertising and media, are deliberately designed to bypass your bouncer and head straight for the depths of your subconscious mind, it starts to become more obvious that we need to give our bouncer some “rules of engagement” by which to accept or reject the constant flow of information. After peeling away so much of my own programming like layers of an onion, and realizing that there would probably be no end to the process in this lifetime if I didn’t find a way to blow through more programming in a shorter period, I began to recognize the importance of giving my bouncer a specific, concise Mission Statement to operate with. I’ll pick it up there in my next post.

Of course I wouldn’t be writing this article if the Violet Flame hadn’t been brought back to my attention in a very powerful way. A few years after setting it aside, my first significant experience happened around the same time as I was refining my dynamite method. In a long meditation session one night I was merrily working through my chakras, doing away with any energetic and subconscious structures that shouldn’t be there. I was about to start disposing of them by fire as was my usual approach at the time, when a sudden inspiration brought to mind things I had read about the Violet Flame from a trusted source more recently. I intuitively felt that it seemed well suited for this work, so I went with it. This impulse may have had some “prompting,” because once I decided to use it on my offending blockages, I had a brief vision of a large metal bowl on a pedestal burning with this purple fire; an ancient Greek style building in the background. I sort of mentally shrugged, formed a torch for myself and lit it in this bowl. When I went to stick the torch into the chakra I had been working on… WHOA! If there was any doubt that I had been imagining all this, it was quickly dispelled by the very intense sensations going through my torso. I could distinctly feel the shape of this torch as I moved it through my system, and I could feel cords, blockages and other structures falling to the flames like melting butter. At that point I knew I had stumbled (or been nudged, more likely) into something very potent.

After experimenting like this for a few days, the thought occurred to me that the Violet Flame might be something one could be attuned to, like Reiki. For those not familiar with the terminology, an attunement is an alteration to one’s energetic system that allows access to a specific type of energy, which can then be channeled and directed by the intent of the healer. I went into meditation and asked to receive an attunement – and got one. I know I got one partly from the immediate whooshing sensation that went through me, but mainly because it then spent a good three days kicking my ass. Major symptoms of clearing, and energetically just completely wiped out; I had to stop all spiritual practice until I was sure that everything had stabilized. Compared to the relatively mild clearing after my reiki attunements, I’d guess that this was a matter of the Violet Flame doing what it does, i.e. cleaning me out – but doing a whole lot of it, at very deep levels, in a short period, as it was integrating itself into my system. After that was over, I felt phenomenal; my energy was in a state that it never has been before, and I had a great new tool to work with. That said, considering that I’ve been doing regular energy work, and clearing out my own baggage for years already, and was still knocked flat by this attunement for several days – I would not recommend getting too gung-ho about seeking this attunement for beginners, or those who have never done any internal work.

Speaking of what it does – what DOES it do?

Keep in mind that what I have to say about the Violet Flame is stated in my own words, and based strictly on my own personal experience since receiving my attunement. As such, it may or may not agree with what you might read from other sources online. In broad terms, the Violet Flame works by quickly raising energy that it comes up against, to a much higher rate of vibration. For practical purposes, this means that it gets blocked and stagnant energy moving, and it transmutes negative energy into positive. While it’s not literal fire, it behaves very similarly to how heat increases the vibration and changes physical matter from one state to another.

It is often said that the Violet Flame “dissolves karma.” Though I would agree with this, it should be noted that most sources that make this claim assume a view of “karma” that I strongly disagree with. What it does do, is change what you attract by changing you. As is often explained in this blog, your habitual thoughts, emotions and deeply held beliefs all shape the experiences you attract – and all are made up of energy at their most basic level. The transmuting properties of the Violet Flame work on these structures and patterns within your subconscious mind, and chakras, to transform them into a state that is beneficial to you. Of course, it can’t change your beliefs or habits for you – you have to do that yourself. If there’s a lesson that needs to be learned, the learning still needs to take place. Although in such cases, the Violet Flame literally “brings issues to light” – I often find that after a healing session, things like inspiration and awareness of things I should address is heightened, and I am inspired with the best means to do so, which can prevent instances of having to learn things the hard way. In this sense, the Violet Flame can prevent undesirable events by removing internal structures that would have attracted them, before they happen.

From the standpoint of an energy healer, compared to Reiki, the Violet Flame is a much more active modality. While it also seems to be a “smart energy” that possesses its own consciousness in a sense, it is much more suited to being consciously used and directed by the healer. This works well for me, as it’s something I can adapt, innovate and get creative with. In addition to the torch that I first used on my chakras, I also created a pit of fire to push undesirable internal structures into after I demolish ‘em. One of my favorite things to I came up with to do with the Violet Flame is to use it as a banishment of sorts, to clear a room of any negative entities or energy that are hanging around. To do this I vividly imagine and intend soaking the room with oil, and then tossing out a violet fireball to ignite it. Any troublesome entities in the vicinity tend to leave quickly, and others have attested to the atmosphere improving quickly without knowing exactly what I did. Alternately, a Violet Flamethrower works well too. For less epic but no less practical day to day use, it’s great for dissolving any fear, anxiety, or lingering “icky” vibes quickly by sending a blast of it through my system. I frequently find myself using it throughout the day as an easy pick-me-up to improve how I’m feeling. As for deeper work, nowadays it’s rare that I do any healing or repatterning on myself without the Violet Flame being involved. My experimentation to find creative new applications is ongoing, and I have no doubt that this awesome energy still has a few new things to show me.

After spending some time working on myself and other guinea pigs volunteers to familiarize myself with this tool and its capabilities, I am now confident and comfortable enough to begin offering Violet Flame sessions to those who would like to experience it directly, as well as attunements for those who feel drawn to incorporate this powerful tool into their healing practice. Gangstalking, for those unaware of the phenomenon, is a term for situations where a targetted individual is being harrassed over the long term in an organized way. Some cases of gangstalking exhibit elements of negative interference from a non-human source, in that things can happen that can’t be accounted for by regular people acting on their own, no matter how well organized they are. A common scenario is for the targetted individual to be going about their business in public, and be harassed by random people on the street. This is not “normal” harassment however – many targetted individuals have noted that the harassers will be going about their own business as usual, when a very noticeable mask-like change comes over them within seconds. Formerly cheerful seeming individuals suddenly appear unnaturally hateful and angry, and then begin hurling abuse. The abuse itself is interesting in that it will seem specifically tailored to the target’s vulnerabilities for maximum emotional impact – and many times it will go as far as the exact same words being used by completely different and equally random people, in different situations, on different days. My personal experience has been more of the “negative interference” than the “organized human” sort.

Needless to say, gangstalking phenomena can take things like social anxiety to a whole new level. In overcoming this obstacle, first of all I cannot stress enough how much of a difference the simple exercises of grounding and shielding make. I’m highly empathic so crowds, shopping and public transport are major issues for me. Shielding blocks out nearly all of the “babble” and assault on my sensing that I’d get hit with when in large groups of random people, although I’m still alerted to approaching trouble, such as groups of intimidating yobs. Grounding techniques help me when I feel overwhelmed, a common ADD symptom. I also wear an ametrine crystal to help with this.

This still didn’t solve the problems with Random Nasty Bastards. These gangstalking episodes would come literally out of the blue, with perpetrators going out of their way to screw up my day. I expect a few comments; everyone gets unwanted attention at some point, as they walk past a drunk, or gang of builders for example. What I got was far beyond that, to the point where attacks were obviously timed and scripted. I came up with an approach to dealing with the anxiety I felt, while putting a stop to obviously neg-influenced incidents.

Taking my inspiration from “The Secret” aka The Law of Attraction, I make a series of affirmations and visualise positive experiences while I’m getting ready to go out.

“This is my life, and every encounter in it is for my benefit.”
“My sphere of influence contains decent people.”
“I/we will have a pleasant walk.”

I get into a good frame of mind before I leave, reasoning I’ll attract good things If I’m not in War Mode. Breathing exercises control my increasingly rare panic attacks, as does grounding the nervous energy.

If I sense an obvious troublemaker is approaching I try to feel pity for them, and their obviously unfulfilling life, rather than getting tense and angry. I walk with confidence and project attitude rather than shield defensively. This works well, and where I’d previously get threats or abuse, they now hurry past sheepishly. Where I’d once felt intimidated I now feel empowered. Groups of mouthy teenagers are now more jokes than jerks.

Much of what we attract in any given day is down to ourselves. There will always be incidents that are beyond your control, but you are still responsible for how those incidents affect you. In cases of intentional harassment, your emotional response is often the key to determining whether it happens again. A victim mentality only attracts victimization, but when we stand up to the bullies in our lives, we take back our personal power.

Hands up, who here has gone through personal trauma? Anyone carrying around emotional baggage? Past resentment? Unbalanced emotional issues? Personal traits you aren’t proud of? Ever take something someone said to heart? Ever realized you were holding a self-limiting belief about the world, other people or yourself?

(Peering out over my readership…)

(Now addressing anyone who’s left that’s not creeped out by my Jedi-like ability to see you through my monitor, muahaha…)

Ahem. Well, that’s all of us. So we should probably all keep reading, no?

In my last post I discussed why conscious belief is not necessarily a cure-all for solving the problem of negative interference. All the issues I mentioned above are keys as to why that is.

Anyone who has grown up on planet earth will have ended up taking on subconscious baggage and other internal debris that causes discord in our lives; causes us to limit and even sabotage ourselves. We’re indoctrinated with self-limiting beliefs; we go through trauma and heartbreak; we have personality traits that negatively affect our relationships with ourselves and others.

We all have a shadow side which is called that partly because it’s where all our flaws reside, and partly because it’s our blind spot; the things we don’t like to look at or are unable to see for what they are.

In this sense, negative entities can be considered external representations of our collective shadow side. Any of the above mentioned issues are fair game for an entity attachment. Over time a long term attachment can exaggerate our most destructive qualities into something that causes much pain to ourselves and others. Even in the short term, an entity’s influence can have effects such as ramping up our emotions in such a way that, say, a minor yet heated disagreement turns into a full on raging inferno where things are said and done that we regret.

There are some who believe that this is the “purpose” of such entities in our lives – they draw our attention to our shadow side so that we can take responsibility for, and integrate it in a balanced way. Some, particularly very religious people, take this even further – a Christian might say it’s “God’s will.” God has been portrayed variously in the Christian tradition, as sending entities, or allowing people to come under their influence, whether as punishment or a growth experience. This theme is prominent in the film The Exorcism of Emily Rose for instance. It’s not limited to Christianity though; a Hindu might say this is one’s “karma.”

I would strongly caution that any belief that suggests a “purpose” for negative entities in your life is dangerous, because it’s all the permission they need to stick around.

Yes, entities can have the effect of forcing us to grow. The problem there is that rather than just drawing our attention to an imbalance in ourselves – entities work to throw us off balance by any available means. It is well within the realm of possibility for negs to find a small hairline crack in one’s personality, and depending on the strength of the entity, chipping away, jackhammering away or launching missiles at the crack until it’s a serious all-consuming problem. In situations like this, even the most diligent, self-empowered and responsible individual can have old problems being targetted and new problems piled on faster than is humanly possible to clear them out.

For a real world example, imagine that in a moment of anger and carelessness, an adult calls a child stupid. As is usually the case in these situations the child takes it to heart, and this statement finds its way into the subconscious. As the child reaches adulthood, although the statement is still there on some level, at this point it’s just subconscious debris, and may well be mostly counteracted by other, more positive influences and successes in the person’s life. However, now imagine an opportunistic entity comes into the picture, finds this piece of debris and attaches to it as the basis for a sabotage campaign. Over the long term, through mental and emotional conditioning, “stupid” is reinforced, and on top of that is piled worthless, lazy, ugly, miserable failure, socially inept… you get the idea. After months and possibly years of this, the original comment has been turned into something that consumes the person’s entire self image. Since our self image and the contents of our subconscious are the basis for much of the way we experience life, pretty soon other people and circumstances will begin to mirror all this extra crap the person is carrying around that they weren’t to begin with. Thus a vicious cycle is born that takes a whole lot more work to fix than would have been the case if the individual only had to clear the original bit of debris. Technically it requires the individual’s ongoing consent for this process to continue. This is one of many instances where “consent” and “permission” can get very fuzzy however. For someone who has never considered the possibility that maybe not all their thoughts and emotions are really theirs, or even that we can take responsibility for our thoughts and emotions and consciously decide which ones to allow into our mental space, breaking this sort of cycle can become very difficult. The silver lining is that many entities of this sort depend on their host’s ignorance of their presence – meaning as soon as you demonstrate some willpower and start taking steps to change your own mental habits, they’ll leave without a struggle and simply find an easier target. Unfortunately negs are notoriously messy houseguests, so you may still be stuck taking out the trash they’ve left behind.

Volumes could be written on ways to clear out entity attachments as well as how to clear subconscious baggage and integrate the personality… and probably will be, in future posts here. For the purpose of this one, the best place to start is with the same basic tool I’ve been hammering on throughout this series: total personal responsibility for your own thoughts, actions, words and emotions. Working toward self mastery has a host of benefits, not the least of which is that it makes us less vulnerable to malicious influences in our lives, whether physical or nonphysical. It also brings us to the conclusion that we have the authority, and responsibility to ourselves, to be vigilant about choosing who and what to allow into our space.

At this point I’ve decided to shift gears. I had originally planned on carrying on this series a lot longer… but as others who have written on this subject will attest, it’s not an easy thing to write about for a lot of reasons, especially for an extended period. Beyond that, this has been a major period of insights and breakthroughs for me, and my backlog of topics to write on is growing immense (just ask some of the poor unsuspecting people I’ve been bombarding with babble to let some steam off my suddenly overactive throat chakra. ) I’m at a point where I personally am less focused on “what to avoid” and more focused on what I actually want, so dragging this on any further at this time is creating conflict for me that I feel is starting to affect the quality of the writing. The fact remains that this is a complex subject that deserves a lot more attention than it gets, and I’ve got enough material that I could keep this going for months. But that’s a long time to spend on any one subject… especially this one.

So.

I’m thinking that the Negative Entities 101 series will be kind of an ongoing thing that I will keep adding to as I feel so compelled, and I’m open to requests on what info my readers are specifically looking for on the subject.

Needless to say, I am NOT of the view that all spiritual beliefs are valid; not all are created equal. Are your beliefs causing you pain? Limiting your freedom? Making you want to
limit the freedom of others? Guilting or manipulating you into giving your personal power and
energy away to an outside source? Then why do you hold them? A belief is something
that remains unproven by definition — so why hold beliefs that aren’t helping you evolve?
Such beliefs are vulnerabilities that can easily be taken advantage of for the purpose of
negative interference. I am of the view that if a belief is beneficial, it probably stands a better chance of being closer to the truth than one that has no demonstrable basis in reality. Speaking of reality…

You Create Your Own Reality

Most people reading this will be familiar with the concept that we create our own reality. Unfortunately many have taken this as far as “if I don’t believe in it, it can’t hurt me.” This is the spiritual equivalent to the ostrich that sticks its head in the sand and expects the problem to go away.

It is true that not giving attention and energy to a problem is ONE way to diminish that problem’s influence over you IF the problem is being CAUSED or contributed to by your attention and energy. If it has another cause, then you’re just turning your back on a threat and giving it all the permission it needs to have its way with you. Your conscious participation in their game is only one of the vulnerabilities that can be exploited by malicious entities; there are many others. Spiritual naivety is one of them.

External Saviors

The belief in external saviors — something outside ourselves, whether human, divine or cosmic, that will swoop in and fix the problem, is another one that should be reconsidered. Spiritual assistance is a perfectly valid concept, but in the end nobody is here to live your life, learn your lessons or overcome your challenges but YOU. The best spiritual helpers and teachers point you toward the answers and the source of power within yourself. There may be the occasional boost during a rough period, or nudge in the right direction when we’re stumped for an answer, but they aren’t going to do it for you. Anything that claims to carry you only wants to control you. It is for this reason that I say negative entities and many churches and religious groups are only adversaries in the sense that they’re competing with each other for YOUR resources. As a rule, anyone that wants you to become subservient and give your power away to something outside yourself is going to make you an easier target. Notable exceptions would be groups that encourage you to find your own truth, reach your potential and foster a mutually uplifting experience.

Spiritual Warfare

The belief in “spiritual warfare” is another common pitfall. So you’ve awakened to the point where you realize there really is something to this crazy spiritual stuff after all — and you’ve recognized it’s not all love ‘n light out there. This is all good, but at this point some people take it upon themselves to strap on the proverbial armor and run out to battle evil. The problem is that negative entities are like the Hydra — you cut off one head and several more grow in its place. To kill it you would have to get in a good body shot — and in that case you’re looking straight into the shadow side of the creator itself. Good luck with that; be sure and let me know how it turns out.

If you went scuba diving and got attacked by a shark, would you hate the shark, and go forth to declare war on all of sharkdom? Probably not — technically you entered its home and it was just doing what sharks do. It’s a risk you take when you swim in the ocean, and negative interference is a risk we take when we incarnate on earth. Given the choice to fight or just avoid the situation entirely, the second option is a lot easier on you in the long run. Being in a constant war with this stuff can easily consume your whole life and cause you to become like that which you’re fighting against if you let it. If you define part of your identity as being against something, like negs, then you will keep attracting negs! This is one instance where we DO have a say in creating our reality. One of my biggest breakthroughs in drastically diminishing my neg problem was switching my focus, from coming up with better defenses (i.e. putting myself in a defensive position) to simply wanting to feel good.

Don’t get me wrong — I resonate strongly with the warrior archetype, and have a great appreciation for it. But to me this means that if something enters MY space uninvited, or I am asked for assistance by someone in a similar situation, I have the ability, and authority, to remove it with as much force as necessary. It does not mean I have the authority to invade the space of other beings — even negative ones. If you essentially go into their home territory looking for a fight, don’t be surprised if waves of them start showing up in yours. If you go out looking for a war you’ll find one, and ultimately there will be no winners. There’s a lot of truth in the quote from the movie War Games that the only winning move is not to play. Instead letting yourself get dragged onto a battlefield of never-ending struggle and playing by the dark’s rules – start playing by your own rules, and leave their game behind.

Metaphysical ability and exploration do not, in themselves, make one a target… but there are ways that they can. The first example of these is a person who has latent abilities, but does not develop or use them; possibly doesn’t even know they exist. This falls under the principle of “to whom much is given, much is required.” If you’re not living up to your potential, and the universe is treating you as if you are or should be, you’ve got a major conflict on your hands. In this sense negative entities can act as a cosmic “nudge” to start living up to one’s potential in that we’re given a problem that can only be solved by doing so. I have sympathy for people in this position as I realize life circumstances often do everything possible to discourage us from finding out who we are, much less living it — but the fact remains that this is a very real phenomenon.

The second example involves people who know they have some natural ability, or start opening their eyes to the greater reality — and begin reacting in fear. Those who have some natural ability or are otherwise ready to start waking up will at some point probably see some strange things that they don’t understand. The mistake here is to fall into fear, paranoia and obsession. There are people who will witness a few unusual events; pretty soon their imagination takes over and has them believing every demon in the abyss is personally gunning for them. They’re shooting off the energy of fear in every direction, and pretty soon they do attract negative attention. Another possibility is that a neg deliberately causes such a person to witness something strange. It starts out with something that might be disturbing but basically harmless — looking for a reaction. If it gets the reaction, it is able to gain further entry. A cycle of interference, overreaction, sabotage and self-sabotage can be created in this way. People who look for demons under every rock will eventually start finding them.

The third example are people with natural ability but little knowledge and experience. This combination can easily be taken advantage of by an opportunistic neg, to take someone starting out on a legitimate path and lead them off on a wild goose chase. This can take many forms, but the most common scenario is an entity posing as a well known religious figure, or claiming to be a spirit guide. If you’re sensitive enough to hear spirits directly but not experienced enough to have a well developed sense of discernment or intuition, it is suggested that you thoroughly question and test anything that wants your attention. High-end positive spirits will understand and even encourage this need for caution; they will be patient and never become defensive. They’re there to play a supportive role, but really prefer to let us work out our own paths as much as possible. They should be treated respectfully but do not demand subservience. They always respect free will and will leave immediately if asked. In contrast, negative spirits do not enjoy being questioned though they may play along for a little while. They will be a bit too insistent and intrusive in an attempt to convince you of whatever it is they’re selling. The main thing to remember is that with positive beings, you will always be in the active position and the final authority over your path and your experience. Negative entities will always try to take control of the situation and convince, trick or try to intimidate you into handing your authority over to them. In all cases one must keep in mind that we are the only true authority over our own lives and spiritual path, and we have the final say in what we will and will not allow into our space.

Many people approach metaphysics and the paranormal simply because they want to see something strange and unusual happen — and as such, they do so without any safeguards, protection or clarity about what they will and will not allow into their space. Using a Ouija board as a party game and attempting to contact spirits is a prime example. As an analogy, the way many people approach this would be a lot like going into a random chatroom online, giving your home address to the first anonymous person you see, and inviting them into your house to ask them pressing questions about your life. Once you give explicit permission to any entity that feels like entering your space, you may well end up with something that doesn’t want to leave.

If there’s a genuine desire to pursue these subjects, it’s always good to do research and learn from the experiences of those who have been there already — especially those whose mistakes you can learn from.

Another side of this subject is people with a bit more experience whose arrogance takes them in an unhealthy direction. An arrogant personality who believes nothing bad can happen to them, and spiritual practice, can be a recipe for disaster. Online forums for instance, are filled with people who think they know a lot more than they actually do, and who believe they’re capable of more than they are. Negative entities are experts at stroking one’s ego for the purpose of manipulation. I have known people who came to believe they could “control” spirits — and as a matter of policy I distance myself from those people, quickly. Why? Because as soon as you fall into the trap of trying to control other free willed beings, you step onto a playing field where you’ve already given full permission to be manipulated and controlled by something that has a lot more experience at that game than you do. It’s not going to turn out well.

Arrogance and recklessness are two of many possible imbalanced personality traits that can be exploited by manipulative entities. Much like the addictions discussed in the last post, increasingly grandiose ego-boosts can become like a drug that negs are only too happy to provide. Seeking one’s next “fix” then begins to override the protective functions of logic and reason, intuition and common sense. Metaphysics and spiritual practices can add whole new levels of meaning to our lives – but could potentially lead one down a dangerous road if not approached in a respectful, responsible and balanced way.

The next post in this series will elaborate on possible pitfalls for newly awakening seekers and those who discover some natural metaphysical ability.

In the last post I discussed how, when we aren’t in full control of ourselves, we leave ourselves open to anything that might want to take control. A person with a chemical addiction is the most obvious example of someone not in control of all their faculties; thus making them an easier target for negative entities. Drug and alcohol addictions are the most obvious — but anything that is done in excess as an escape can be an addiction. Gambling, sex, the internet, work, videogames — the list goes on.

Drugs and alcohol are in a special category. In addition to the fact that an addiction takes control over one’s actions, drugs and alcohol alter the brain’s chemistry in such a way that one does not have full control over their mind and body either. When someone is intoxicated to the point of not being in full control, their natural defenses are seriously compromised. To refer back to the analogy of one’s house: this has the effect of not only leaving the doors and windows unlocked, but wide open as well. Many family members and friends of addicts have observed that sometimes, “something takes over” and it’s as if the addict turns into a whole other person. One can only wonder if this is where the phrase “monkey on my back” originated. It may also explain the familiar phenomenon of an addict saying and doing destructive things that the individual would not normally, and then having no memory of it later. As a poster on a well known forum recently recalled:

“As a child I regularly saw my alcoholic father at a certain level of inebriation, suddenly change in looks, and in character right before my eyes. The switch was almost instantaneous, and within seconds he literally looked like somebody else – not my father. The eyes flashed dark and foreboding and his energy changed from my father’s drunk energy into something dark and very ugly hell bent on creating fear, chaos and pain for others – both physically and
mentally.”

This quote underscores the point that negative entities seek to cause as many problems for as many people with as little effort as possible. Since an addiction can do serious damage not only in the addict’s life, but the lives of loved ones as well, it takes relatively little effort for an opportunistic entity to turn what is already a problem into even more of a major source of pain and heartbreak for all involved. For the addict him or herself to overcome the addiction is hard enough, but an attached entity can turn a basic urge into an overwhelming compulsion. While it’s not unheard of for someone to break the cycle and overcome addiction where an entity is involved, ideally the entity would be removed first so that rehabilitation can proceed without extra interference. It is for this reason that I wish all treatment programs included an emphasis on regular spiritual practices for developing one’s focus, will and energy system, such as meditation and basic energy work at the very least. With all addictions, additional influence or not, developing willpower — the ability to resolve to do something, and then do it no matter what — is very important.

A non-malevolent but equally problematic factor worth mentioning is earthbound spirits of former alcoholics. Many sources that I consider reputable have indicated that unless an addiction is resolved in life, we take them with us after death. A nonphysical spirit has neither the means to satisfy a craving for a physical substance, nor the ability to overcome the craving. What they can do is develop an empathic connection with a living alcoholic and experience the intoxication through them. Unfortunately this means that the spirit is continuously urging the person to drink more and more, and the living person basically has the cravings of two people to contend with. The spirit may be able to get help releasing the addiction on a higher plane; unfortunately in many cases the addiction is keeping them tethered to the physical plane in the vain attempt to satisfy their craving. Instances like this should be dealt with as a haunting rather than clearing a negative entity, though ways to figure out which is which, and accomplish either, are beyond the scope of this article. One’s best bet in cases like this is generally to get in touch with someone who has experience in these matters.

If you are close to someone with an addiction, even if you suspect them of being influenced by an entity, your first priority should be your own safety and well being, and that of any kids involved. Any attempts to offer assistance to an afflicted person should always be approached with this firmly in mind: the best way to help someone else is to start by refusing to let yourself be controlled by their problem.

It is also important for all parties to keep in mind that there are no excuses for bad behavior — whether chemical or spiritual. I realize it can be extremely difficult to “own” things one may have said and done while not consciously aware of their actions, including actions that were influenced by a malevolent entity. The fact remains that personal responsibility is one of THE most potent weapons in one’s arsenal, against addictions and entities alike. All things considered, it is a small price to pay for the freedom of one’s consciousness.

Editor’s note: Upon writing out the piece on the subject of who is targetted and why, I realized I had a monster of a post stretching over five pages. At this point I figured this subject was important enough to make it a “series within a series,” and would be a lot more readable if broken up into six chunks. So, off we go!

One of the pillars of my approach to negative entities is that, as with everything else — I can’t control the actions or intentions of other free-willed beings. If someone thinks it’d be a good idea to punch me in the nose, I can’t stop them from trying; all I can do is anticipate the confrontation and defend myself to the best of my ability. Likewise, I can’t stop a negative entity from wanting to target me if they feel so inclined. What I can do is learn everything possible about why they might choose to attack me, and thus make myself a less attractive or visible target. The purpose of this part of the series is to share what I’ve learned about who is more likely to be targetted and why.

If there’s one single piece of insight I’ve found that is key to the negative interference phenomenon (and regular human interaction for that matter) it is this:

When I am not living consciously, not taking full responsibility for my thoughts, words, actions and energy, there’s a good chance something else will, and that something will not have my best interest in mind.

When I’m not in full control of myself, there’s an opening for something else to control me. When I act in ignorance, there’s an opening for something to influence my actions negatively. When I act in fear, I have already given something outside myself control over me. When I’m
not using my energy consciously and efficiently, it can be pulled in directions that are not beneficial to me.

When I am not making full use of my free will, it can be subverted for purposes that are not in my best interest.

Developing on all these fronts is a lifelong pursuit, and I certainly don’t make any claims of mastering them all — but I do know that simply recognizing these things are important represents a huge leap in one’s spiritual development. It also represents all the ways to see that one’s well being is not being interfered with, by negative entities or anything else. The best way to counter negative interference is not by focusing on it, but by working on YOU.

This does not mean that anyone who hasn’t done serious work on self mastery, or is vulnerable, will be targetted by negative entities. Many people will never see any serious negative interference in their lifetime. Many people are also living with negative interference while not recognizing the problem, however. As an analogy, imagine you’ve left your house unlocked overnight. You may or may not get robbed, but the point is that if someone does happen by who wants to break in, they can do so easily. It would be helpful to keep this in mind as I go through examples, so if one does fall under one or more of them, they won’t become paranoid (and thus possibly attract negative attention that wasn’t there to begin with, or convince themselves it’s there when it isn’t.)
