Experiences with Nonlinear Time and the Multiverse

Several months ago Gehenna and I heard something from our guidance along the lines of “time will be getting weird.” Call me nutty (and you’d be right), but my first thought was “sounds like fun.” I’ve been fascinated with the prospect of exploring the subject of nonlinear time ever since I stumbled on the idea that the usual, linear and cyclical way that we experience time, is not the only possible way.

I have had periodic experiences that seem to hint at the nonlinear nature of time, as well as the “multiple worlds” (and by extension, alternate selves) theory, as far back as 1997. There have been quite a few instances where people have had some sense of my presence, or even heard my voice when I was physically somewhere else, even if close by.

In high school I gained a reputation for often being silent and ninja-like, which I thought was fun to play with at the time (and still do, though I’m not nearly as much of an arse about it now) which got me the nickname “the phantom.” I had been hanging out with three friends at one of their houses one afternoon but had a falling out with one of them, and after some deliberation, decided to disappear to see what another friend was up to across the neighborhood. The next day, all three people who had been at the first house insisted that I had stayed the whole time (while the fourth friend agreed that I had been with him during that time). Of course, at the time none of us knew what to make of it, and I mostly wanted to drop the subject, not wanting to argue about something when I didn’t even know what to think myself.

Since then, there have been many times with Gehenna especially, where she has felt my presence, heard my voice or both, coming from somewhere other than where I actually was at the time. It’s not uncommon for example for me to be debating heading upstairs, ultimately decide to stay downstairs, and her to get some sense of me having gone up after all.

The other most common type of event has to do with differing memories between individuals for the same period. Granted, human memory is fallible, but the events I’m thinking of all come with the same prod that says “pay attention, something important is happening” that I get with synchronicity and other fun reality-blips. A common thread has been that the event in question is too recent for memory to degrade that quickly, and too mundane for either party to have a vested interest in changing the details – and yet the details are so drastically different that it leaves one with a sense of “did we really witness the same set of events? Are you really the same person I was there with at the time?” Are they, indeed…

Speaking of which, the rise of sites like Facebook, with their tendency to put us back in touch with people we haven’t heard from in years, has seemed to generate some similar phenomena as well. There have been a few instances of completely irreconcilable memories upon comparing notes, but beyond that, certain people seem very different – not just in the sense that people change over time, but fundamentally different in some way that’s hard to describe, which gives the distinct sense that the person I remember and the one I’ve gotten back in touch with may not be from the same continuity.

Time Gets Weird

A few weeks after being given the “heads up” by our nonphysical friends, and just as I had the sense that significant shifting was indeed happening on various planes, a friend sent me a web comic done with photos of people in costumes, featuring the Norse god Thor battling the Greek god Chronos. This struck me as oddly synchronistic that these two in particular were paired together, being from different pantheons, and considering the symbolism involved, as well as the timing. In Norse mythology Thor’s arch nemesis is the world serpent. This is of course a representation of cyclical time in many traditions, though I have not specifically seen much made of this association in any commentary on the Norse myths that I’ve come across. To me the symbolism has always seemed to clearly refer to the breaking of a cycle and the instituting of a new way to relate to time. Chronos is of course a personification of a linear way of ordering and experiencing time.

Within a week or so after this and other time-related synchronicity, Gehenna and I had a series of interesting experiences. She experienced several “time wobbles,” meaning that the clock went backward and then forward again by several minutes when she’d look back at it; one of these events was witnessed by both of us once we started paying closer attention.

Until those began happening I had always remained at least somewhat skeptical about all these experiences; many were ambiguous, or could be explained in some other way without resorting to actual time fluctuations or alternate timelines.

One morning in mid-February I was sitting in our living room when Gehenna came down the stairs, put her boots on, finished getting ready, we said goodbye to each other and she left to run some errands. About five minutes later I went upstairs for something, when I felt a very strong intuitive prod to go in the bedroom. “No, really, you should check this out.” So I do – and there’s Gehenna, getting ready to go out.

A few days later there was a similar event, where I heard her come home twice within about ten minutes, though according to her she had only been out once. I heard her come in, close our very loud heavy door, go up the stairs which also creak loudly… and then several minutes later, I hear the same process repeat without her having come back down in between, which I also would’ve heard.

Luckily Gehenna is someone I can tell these things and we can both appreciate the nuttiness, have fun with it and go “ooooh,” without her calling the men in white coats to cart me off. :P But what do these experiences say about the nature of reality, and what may be possible to experience and achieve within it?

In my next post I’ll explore why these sorts of experiences are important, as well as the implications of moving away from the linear, materialist universe worldview, and on toward a nonlinear, multidimensional mode of awareness.
