The common religious practice of releasing or repressing desires and attachments might make you feel more pious, and will probably take the edge off the desires, but it will also make you increasingly impotent when it comes to actually achieving and experiencing the things you love.

When we release desires, either via the usually recommended process of releasing attachments, or writing things off as unattainable for whatever reason, they don’t just evaporate like religion’s credibility in the face of critical thought. Aspects of ourselves with no such inhibition simply wander off — to fullfill the desire. The problem is that if your conscious self continues to reject and release the desire (or the concept of desire itself), these aspects capable of fulfilling them end up stranded, because you refuse to have them back. Often you’ve got a relatively simple self aspect, its existence based almost solely on a single desire, and thus not having much other context with which to direct itself. It ends up somewhere that it can fullfill the desire, but then has no way out of its self-generated nonphysical environment. Back at your conscious Self, you’ve got a situation where, after this process has repeated itself over time, the whole 1. loses power to achieve its desires, and 2. stops caring, but 3. ends up in a similar sort of limbo, having lost the ability to propel itself in any direction. Welcome to zombie-hood.

Once I figured all this out, I sent out a broadcast of my intent for all desire-based aspects of myself that I had ever rejected, to return, and felt some very empowering energetic effects over the course of the next few days. (I also had more experiential evidence of how disempowering some of the most widespread religious beliefs are; namely “desire = suffering,” or “desire = sinful”; pick yer poison). As of now I have a policy that all aspects of myself are expected to do what they love, in whatever form they’re best suited to, in alignment with my mission statement. If I have a desire that for whatever reason can’t be fulfilled in the physical at the time, I release it with the intent that it will be fulfilled somewhere on the astral, and return.

This has been very beneficial in a number of ways. The most immediate effect was that rather than carrying around a bunch of unconscious patterns and history that said most of my dreams and desires were infeasible and even “wrong,” I now had access to a large part of myself that had lots of experience and knowledge of how to go about fulfilling them, and “memories” of what they’re like to experience. Since taking up this practice my conscious mind does not feel the need to spend much time dwelling on desires, which removes any “suffering” component from the process without removing the desires themselves. Sometimes it is satisfying enough that they’ve been fulfilled nonphysically and there is no further want, though for the times when it’s something I actually do want to experience in the physical, it certainly fulfills the LOA rule of “feeling as if you have it now” if part of yourself already has. I’m finding that as the various aspects of my subconscious mind get used to experiencing the things they love freely, the effect trickles over and my success with the LOA increases in my daily life. I still have a ways to go before I would consider myself any sort of “expert,” but I have definitely seen enough to validate what I’m saying here, to be comfortable laying it out for my readers. Update pending the point at which I can write it from my epic Scottish castle. ;)

While many of the most commonly referenced factors for successful manifestation certainly seem relevant, in practice my biggest breakthroughs with the LOA have come as a result of working closely with my own subconscious mind and doing the integration work I have referenced throughout this series. Many people have trouble with manifestation, not because they’re not positive or grateful enough – but because their subconscious mind is a jumble of conflicting intentions, fears, beliefs and patterning that they may not even be able to percieve. I can say from experience that it is possible to be almost militantly positive and optimistic, and even feel great emotionally and energetically, but get no results, or even the opposite of the results you’re shooting for, because you’ve got subconscious aspects of yourself and others working against your intent.

The more we integrate and become aware of our full multidimensional Selves, the more pull we have when intending to swing probabilities in our favor. I view my subconscious mind somewhat like a highly efficient and cooperative team – I give it an objective, and ideally all aspects of myself point in the same direction to make it happen. This seems to work much like obtaining something I want in the physical world – start by assessing what resources are closest to hand that correspond with the goal, and then begin making connections and networking with others who might be able to provide assistance.

What happens when I turn a goal over to my subconscious mind seems to be much the same process. The first order of business is to get my energy, emotions and vibration aligned with my goal. After that, I send out aspects of myself which begin making connections and arrangements with any necessary parties between myself and my objective – except in a much faster, more efficient and versatile way. Aspects of our subconscious minds are coming, going and communicating with other minds all the time; the Law of Attraction is just one way of utilizing this mechanism deliberately.

This could account for what I’ve observed but not seen mentioned outright anywhere, which is that those who are best at manifestation almost invariably have great networking skills in practice. The subconscious mind tends to pick up the conscious mind’s habits, so if you’ve got a skill for maintaining a large network of people with a mutual willingness to help out, then chances are your subconscious mind is doing the same. Your subby just happens to transcend time and space, and have influence at the physical, nonphysical, energetic and quantum levels, to aid its efforts. All told, I would have to say at this point that manifestation could be summed up most succinctly as a process of networking.

This does not contradict many of the other factors that are said to influence one’s chances of successfully working with the Law of Attraction (one of our good friends has even written an excellent manual. ;) ). I find all the talk about “gratitude raising our vibration” to be a bit nebulous in the way it’s usually portrayed for instance – but it makes a lot of sense that it gets a better response, within and without, in the same way that it does in our normal interactions. This view also certainly allows for the input of “higher powers” and even the universe itself to pitch in. Conscious entities who are attracted to your energy and are willing and able to add their own “pull” to your efforts can choose to do so. Beyond that, there are good reasons to believe that “the universe” as a whole is not just a machine or a collection of “dead” matter – it is a field of consciousness that responds insofar as its parts are able.

As an aside, I realize many of my readers have experienced varying degrees of negative interference, and may have ended up as frustrated as I was by the effect this can have on one’s efforts to manifest desires. I can confirm that it is very possible for the process to be interfered with in ways that extend far beyond simply putting a damper on your mood, and thus your vibration. The process can be interfered with on various levels, with the effect of vetoing and even reversing one’s intent even if everything is done “right.” It doesn’t help that most sources on the Law of Attraction ignore this side of things entirely. A planned article will address methods I’ve developed to account for this.

That aside, if we combine all the usually stated aspects of using the Law of Attraction with the networking abilities of the mobile, multidimensional Soul, it becomes possible to account for the sought after experience of things “magically” falling into place, in the perfect way, in perfect time.

This post picks up the discussion on soul fragmentation with an exploration of some paranormal and metaphysical phenomena that it helps explain.

Some Negative Interference

While negative entities are generally understood to be non-physical beings who are not human and never were, from experience I can say that many (though not all) of the entities who fulfill the same role come from a human source. These entities originate from the Shadow side of living people – i.e. the parts of ourselves we are uncomfortable facing, and cannot or will not express. We all have darker aspects, usually parts of ourselves who have been hurt in some way, or feel that they have been, and want to hurt the offending party in return. I previously explained how negative interference can target these aspects, but there is another possibility – that these aspects become part of the negative interference capable of targetting ourselves and others from without. A third possibility is that external interference imposes destructive programming on part of the Self, which then goes on to cause difficulty for the the Self and others.

Most of us have some desire to be seen as “good people,” and most peoples’ definition of a good person comes from an external source – family, religion, society. Without exception, we also have parts of ourselves that don’t fit that mold, and embody the darker aspects of human nature. Unfortunately most people do not have a healthy way of dealing with these parts of themselves, and usually opt for ignoring, condemning, repressing or releasing them, which is what can cause them to turn destructive.

The milder of these aspects end up as our personality flaws, which have detrimental effects upon our relationships with ourselves and others. Sometimes though, the divide between how the dark aspect wants to express, relative to the needs of other aspects and the conscious ego trying to hold them all together, becomes too great for one mind, and there is a split. The dark aspect, turned loose from the moderating influence and physical limitations of the other parts of the self, goes its own way, free to act without restraint.

Over time, the difference between “human” and “nonhuman” can become blurred in such cases. Consumed by the issue that set it off to begin with, the aspect eventually loses all track of where it came from and even what the original issue was. Over time these aspects can lose touch with anything that most would consider recognizably human, and evolve into something that can be considered demonic. When viewed astrally, these entities may be humanoid, but twisted in some way, or otherwise in various stages of turning into something that appears only part human.

In one of the previous installments I recounted one of my own fragments that was able to interact and be perceived physically by others. Luckily said aspect was good natured, but this is not always the case. Another incident from the not so distant past serves to illustrate this.

As an adolescent and a teenager, I had a habit of being unwilling to show, and eventually feel, anger. Back then I took this as a sign of “advancement” and “maturity,” that there wasn’t really anything that could make me lose control; I could simply let it go and move on. As I learned more about managing and expressing emotions in a way that’s healthy for the self and others, as well as the mechanics of soul fragmentation however, it became increasingly apparent that I would eventually be reintroduced to a ball of raging fury that answered to my name – a collective part of myself made up of “released” grievances that was not only upset for a shopping list of reasons I have consciously long forgotten, but not being able to express itself consciously as well. I wasn’t looking forward to it, but knew that it would at some point become necessary, and so I prepared for the eventuality as well as I was able.

I had been doing extensive integration work, and otherwise broadcasting the intent for things that originated with me to return, but one thing I’ve learned is you can’t always be sure when this is actually going to happen. This one decided to return a few months ago… while walking through the mall. I felt it come over me as if a dark angry cloud had descended, and the suddenness of it threatened to overtake me completely. The volatile, “spiky” energy was intense to the point that the people I was there with felt it, which I wasn’t happy about. Given my estimate of how long this aspect has been away, I’m loathe to think what it was up to in the meantime, and wish I could apologize to anyone affected.

This would be a good example of why I advocate strength of mind, will and ego, because I put all three to good use that day to bring this aspect into consistency with the rest of myself, without allowing the rest of myself to be pulled in its direction. I could feel that it was my energy, and so I made the quick decision to let it into my space, while simultaneously doing my best to shield the people around me, and, y’know, not lose my effing mind in the middle of the mall. With a combination of mental negotiation with the returning aspect, asserting myself very firmly while also giving assurance that I have much healthier methods to deal with such things now, I did manage to calm it down and get it to fully reintegrate without much further trouble.

Gehenna and I have also had numerous experiences of having problems with aspects of other people behaving in ways similar to many negative entities, while the person they originated with most likely had no idea this was taking place. In one such instance, over the course of a few days we could feel that something was “off” energetically, and then a period where things began frequently going wrong in ways that got to be uncanny. Things would just suddenly stop working for no visible reason at a rate that was way too frequent to chalk up to the “Shit Happens” principle. When we looked into it, we got the strong sense of the energy signature of someone we had to disengage from for being codependent to the point of hurting others, to foster dependency upon themselves, among other reasons. This was an aspect of that person, trying to cause problems in our personal lives, and looping the thought “I’ll show them how much they need me!”

Since recognizing just how common this is, when I can feel a presence around myself that shouldn’t be, I have taken to forcefully demanding that it returns to its own creator as a first line of defense before trying anything else. I have found this to work often, and its convenient in that it requires no further effort or looking into what’s actually going on when it does. When dealing with these situations, I have found it important to send them off without judgment or malice toward the person in question, or giving them any further attention once I know they’ve gone. Reason being that it is highly likely that we are all the source of this phenomenon at one time or another, and the objective is to have the offending aspect leave and stay gone, not create further antagonism.

Organic Portals / Hylics

Organic portals, the more recent term for people the Gnostics referred to as “Hylics,” are people who are literally not playing with a full set – of chakras, that is. Historically, and more recently, these have been portrayed variously as people who are “empty,” heartless or soulless.

It is currently our position however, based on our own experience and observation, that the Organic Portal phenomenon applies to a wide range of possibilities where people are operating with some chakras and lacking others, in all possible combinations that are capable of sustaining a physical body. The “classic” organic portal is someone who is essentially made up of basic survival functions and ego; lacking in the capacity for empathy, meaningful connections with others and the divine, or any intrinsic sense of self. Indeed, the term “organic portal” was coined to refer to someone capable of being acted through, spoken through and generally maneuvered at will by sources of negative interference, for distracting and derailing an awakening soul. While the discussion of their existence is undeniably controversial, it is well outside the scope of this article to prove the existence of this condition. Others need to come to their own conclusions on this matter as I have; my aim here is to provide a potential explanation of how they exist.

Based on current knowledge of the mechanics of fragmentation, I understand the organic portal phenomenon to be something along the lines of a spiritual birth defect, much like a physical defect where some of one’s parts are damaged or missing. In fact, given my own experiences of various cognitive, spiritual and in some cases even physical functions either increasing or returning upon the integration of a wayward frag, I would say both situations might originate in similar ways.

I have already discussed how in many cases a fragment is unwilling or unable to return to the physical body while it’s still alive, leaving them in a state of limbo where they might remain for a very, very long time. However, based on the observable principle that “all is in motion,” I doubt that they would be able to “remain so for eternity” as Robert Monroe questioned.

In cases where there is not enough of the soul left in one piece to reincarnate, and thus take up the process of reintegrating its other parts, I speculate that the parts are eventually attracted back to each other one way or another, possibly with help and prodding from the multiverse, by a mechanism that could be considered magnetic. Soul fragments seem to be holographic in the sense that all parts contain at least some sort of “image” of the entirety of their Self of origin, and so enough of these parts may eventually come together into something capable of surviving physically which can then incarnate.

While it seems there are people who exist with all combinations of having, and lacking, various parts, including whole chakras, the classic organic portal is said to function entirely from the lower ones. This would be the base, navel, solar plexus and throat, while lacking in the brow, crown and heart areas. Thus they are “soulless” in the sense that there is no working connection to a Higher Self, and all the implications that involves.

What has struck me as I’ve been combining knowledge of religion, experience and observation of those who fit the description of a hylic, and soul fragmentation, is that the stereotypical OP is essentially the exact reverse of the most common religious ideal. What functions do the lower chakras handle? Will. Sex drive. Emotions. Passions. Desires. Material security. What does religion urge us to relinquish, surpress or otherwise regulate nearly across the board? Yep, see above so I don’t have to repeat myself.

With so many people holding the ideal of functioning solely with the “observer” aspect of the Self and wanting to “just be,” is it suprising that we’ve also got people who are completely unable to engage in meaningful self-observation, and are solely concerned with “doing” – i.e. singlemindedly advancing their material and security-related interests? With so many people fixated on love and oneness as the height of spirituality, (the experience of which can be achieved by operating from the brow, crown and heart exclusively) to the exclusion of will and personal sovereignty, is it all that surpising that we’ve also got sociopaths incapable of love, empathy and spiritual functions whose focus is only on themselves; a condition which modern psychology still has yet to find an explanation or cure for?

Could the pieces of today’s “enlightened masters” end up as tomorrow’s materialistic, pop-culture obsessed zombie horde?

I’ll leave that one for the reader to ponder while I move on to the next relevant subject.

For further reading on Organic Portals I recommend Montalk’s article, Spiritless Humans.

Poltergeists and Hauntings

Much of the phenomena that is commonly described as ghost sightings, hauntings and poltergeist activity bears a striking resemblance to things I have observed, experienced and confirmed as being caused by soul fragmentation. Reports of ghosts, poltergeists and other paranormal phenomena can be considered in terms of entities that exhibit varying degrees of ability to interact with the physical, as well as degrees of awareness and ability to act, and interact, coherently. Likewise for the nonphysical aspects of still living people, including myself, that I and others have had experiences with.

It has often been observed that poltergeist activity, i.e. a nonphysical presence that can interact with physical objects, centers around teenagers going through the emotional turmoil that is common to that age group. Their ability to interact with physical objects, as well as their apparent desire for attention, and anger in some cases, is consistent with an aspect that is, or was, associated with the base chakra of a person. Recall that when a soul frag splits off, it is often composed almost solely of the parts of the self that caused the split, which could well include chaotic emotions – while any inhibitions about expressing them without restraint are left behind with the body and conscious mind. This potentially leaves the fragment free to wreak havoc, and freak out its physical counterparts in the process.

In paranormal literature it’s common to find ghosts and apparitions who do not appear conscious, and are often seen repeating the same actions on every sighting, like a recording on loop. Likewise, in soul retrieval literature, it’s common to find pieces of the self, stuck in a nonphysical environment with very little awareness or mental coherency, “looping” in a similar fashion.

An explanation that has been offered for these seemingly non-sentient apparitions have been described as “recordings” from the past; imprints left on the EM field that we are sometimes able to see and hear in the present. While I think this is a good explanation, and EM fields definitely seem to be a major key into understanding a great deal of paranormal phenomena, I submit that this may be only a partial explanation in many cases.

If these seemingly non-sentient apparitions were only a recording, an energetic phenomenon with nothing but the image of the original person present, my hypothesis is that, subject to entropy, they should degrade over time. I have been told that some of them have been observed to do just that. But what about the ones that don’t? The oldest I have heard of are clear apparitions of Roman soldiers being seen and heard at various places here in England (which I kind of wish I had been there for, ancient history geek that I am!). Some two thousand years, and still goin’ strong.

The possibility I’m suggesting is that perhaps when people are strongly identified with their roles; in this case a sense of duty for instance, and the person who held the role is eventually forced to move on, it may be that the part of them who held it will remain indefinitely. This would mean that this “haunting” might consist of a sense of duty that has been split from its context, has no awareness of the passage of time or anything other than performing its role, until being reintegrated and given a new role by a future incarnation of the same soul.

I am open to further input on this, as my knowledge of the science involved is not terribly extensive and I have seen very few apparitions personally, but it’s definitely something I’ve considered within the context of my knowledge of soul fragmentation.

This piece has focused mainly on the darker side of this phenomenon, but soul fragmentation is not all ghosts and goblins. In the next installment we’ll pick it up with some of the functions of the mobile soul that add richness, a greater dynamic and even fun to our experience.

Ask Gehenna #1

Editor’s note: while I’m working on the next post in the series on Soul Fragmentation, Gehenna has answered some questions from her mailbag, in the first post of her new Q&A series. Enjoy! –PH

In this blog I’ll be answering some questions from Isaac, a talented indie/folk rock/alternative musician from BC, Canada. You can check out his music here www.boylouie.com; and his tweets here. :)

Isaac has asked me several questions:

1. How do you make your daily vibe predictions and psychic weather reports? What is the process? Do they differ?

Ah, well they both involve a really complex process of tantric meditation, arcane ritual and human sacrifice… haha, I kid.

For the Psi Weathers, I’m looking at long term energy trends; the overriding energies over a two-week period and likely “world events” they can lead to. That, and the overlying theme they cause in our personal lives over that time. These I write up a day or two before the time frame they are intended for. I tune in my internal antenna, I reach forward and try to immerse myself in the coming energies. I pull several cards from my Tarot “work deck” to help visualise what I feel. (I use a plain old Rider-Waite deck for this; although I have several beautiful decks that reflect me much more, they are for personal use.)I also pay attention for insightful nudges from my higher help. I try to predict things to look out for in the media and collective consciousness.

For the daily vibes I draw two cards from the Tarot, for inspiration.. and then I reach for the energies of the coming day and correlate them with the vibes I get from the cards. As it’s a combination of both the nudges from the cards, and the energy signature of the day; even the same cards on two separate days will lead to different interpretations. What I end up with is the daily energies which will affect us on a personal level… and a few ideas of how to make the most of them. I always do each daily vibe a day ahead, I’d hate to “cheat” and write it on the day it’s due ;)

They do differ, in that I see the Daily Vibes as wheels within wheels… the day-to-day subtleties, ebbs and flows within the wider scope given by the Psi Weathers.

2. How did you develop your psychic abilities?

I’ve not actively worked on them, not in a “sit down and do energy work” way …although I do believe they can be developed in each one of us by doing precisely that. Since I was tiny I’ve had my freaky ‘fluence! To me, it is an extra sense. I do actually have synaesthesia also, which is an overlapping of the senses, and heightened senses at that. So, you could say I’m extra-sensual.. *sets up porn spam filter in email inbox*

…and back on topic. I guess being aware of, and not dismissing my 6th sense as bullshit, helped it develop. That and using it every day.. you’d not believe how handy it comes in. Other psychics often pinpoint the start of their abilities to trauma, so it could be that when I was tossed across the front yard as a little ‘un by lightning… that may have unleashed something.

3. Do you astral project or lucid dream regularly? Why or why not?

I spontaneously AP quite often but it’s not something I work at or do by intent, the same goes for lucid dreaming. I tend to sleep in a series of naps rather than regular 8 hours so dreaming is sporadic. As for why I don’t work to perfect it… I’m a busy mom to small girls and between them and Beyond Within there aren’t enough hours in the day! I have to pick and choose quite selectively what I want to spend my time doing, and I enjoy other things aside of metaphysical disciplines. It’s not something I’ve written off practising in the future; it is just currently that my free time is spent on self-work, movies and internet. :)

What advice would you give to a beginner?

Ooooh! I’d say “don’t believe everything you read online”. For every well written and coherent blog on metaphysics there are a thousand full of ill-informed claptrap. Spend some time each day connect with your inner voice, your intuition. Getting to know yourself is the first and soundest step to everything from lucid dreaming to demon killing. ;)

Thank you for the questions Isaac!

Enlightenment, Salvation and the Rejection of Power (Part 3)

Enlightenment and salvation are not all they’re cracked up to be, although the truth of the matter will crack you up. Literally. Let’s start putting it all together (and knocking it off with the crappy puns), shall we?

The various Shamanic traditions, and some mystery schools, are the only well established traditions I’ve yet seen that focus specifically on the full reintegration of the Self. For anyone who has seen the Simpsons movie, the scene where Homer has his “vision quest,” is pulled apart and reassembled with a new understanding, is surprisingly true to the theme that pops up across cultures worldwide. What is not very surprising, is the lengths that the major world religions have gone to in persecuting these traditions.

The goals of the most prominent religions, in contrast, are great at pulling you apart, but leave it at that, stopping far short of putting you back together again. At every turn we’re encouraged to hand away our natural power, and either discouraged or actively prevented from using what we’ve got left, while that too is regulated and eventually stripped from us.

The Stagnation of Salvation

The ideal of the three Abrahamic religions, Christianity, Judaism and Islam, is to gain divine favor, which is accomplished largely by following a set of rules. Even in versions of Christianity that are adamantly “faith-based” (as opposed to “works-based”) you still have to believe in the correct checklist of approved doctrines in order to be part of the club, thus the rule-following requirement simply becomes more mental than physical. Judaism and Islam go much further in being overtly rule-based, with religious laws to govern nearly every aspect of one’s daily life.

In all cases, the goal is to relinquish one’s individual will to the divine, and strip the Self of all its “sinful” aspects until you’re left with something capable of following the rules. You get to keep your identity as an individual, but your identity is required to conform to a specific set of criteria that a given sect’s interpretation of its holy book of choice, indicates that its version of God will approve of. Large parts of a human being in a state of wholeness are not well suited to following rules, and so when those parts naturally rebel against being repressed and regulated, we’re told that we are somehow defective and in need of redemption and divine mercy. We’re encouraged to engage in extensive self-betrayal in order to gain God’s approval — ejecting fragments of ourselves all along the way in the process.

In many cases the Abrahamic religions not only require that we reject large parts of ourselves, but also that we impose functions on other parts that they are not designed for. When I began exploring the function of my heart chakra (and thus love) for instance, I found that most religious definitions of love have very little to do with what the heart chakra actually does, and imposing any rules on its processes blocks its ability to properly function. I have already written of how, when I began working with my heart chakra, I found it encased in the energetic equivalent to a large superfortress that had it shut down almost entirely. In hindsight it is easy to see how adhering to the religious definition of love that I grew up with played a large part in forming this structure. It should also be pointed out that I grew up in a relatively moderate version of Christianity, and the beliefs and patterns that contributed to shutting down my heart chakra were not really all that extreme or unusual, relatively speaking.

The mainline strains of the Abrahamic religions have always had an uneasy relationship with their mystics – i.e. those who are more interested in experiencing the divine directly, than reading about it in books or coloring entirely inside the lines as they’ve been established. Historically, in order to remain breathing, mystics have been made to conform their experiences to a pre-existing paradigm that was established for reasons that were largely political, ensuring that much of the benefit of such experiences would, by definition, be lost. For everyone else, metaphysical pursuits have usually been discouraged with fear tactics, likely leading to widespread fragmentation and loss of genuine connections to the divine, and 3rd eye abilities among the faithful.

The most self-destructive feature of the Abrahamic religions may well be their repressive attitudes toward sex. It seems highly likely that the heavy regulation (and in many cases, elimination) of the natural human desire for sex is a massive source of fragmentation — and that’s even when they’re not literally amputating pieces of the male and female sexual anatomy, which would fit the bill for trauma-based fragmentation on top of the physical loss of function. Indeed, there is evidence to support this in the prominent literature on nonphysical exploration.

In Far Journeys (aff.) by Robert Monroe, one of the pioneers on the subject of OBEs in the west, he recounts one such experience. During an astral projection, he encountered an unimaginably massive mountain of writhing bodies, engaged in a frantic, yet futile, attempt at sexual satisfaction. He pulled out one of the participants and tried to communicate, even to the point of screaming in his face to get his attention. Seemingly oblivious to Monroe’s presence or even the fact that he was caught by the leg, the man’s sole focus was on scrambling back into the pile, which he did.

Monroe seems to speculate in the direction of a similar understanding to what’s reflected here, though he does not expand much before moving on.

“…Another emotion washed through me – intense compassion for those trapped in the undulating mass, so focused and intent on seeking sexual satisfaction they were unaware of any other existence – anger at a system that could so inhibit, repress and distort as to create the situation in front of me. Were these the castoffs of the human process, to remain so throughout eternity?” (p. 50)

I strongly suspect that the pile of bodies Monroe encountered were not “lost souls,” but rather, repressed sex drives. It stands to reason that trying to talk to a disembodied sex drive, or tell it to do something other than have sex, is indeed futile, because that’s what one’s sexual component does. Apart from the aspects of the Self responsible for communication, or indeed, anything other than having sex – that’s all it can do until it is reclaimed by the parts of itself that can balance it with the other traits and functions that make for a more dynamic and varied experience. To repress, regulate or distort the sex drive in any way other than that which is voluntarily chosen by the whole Self for its own reasons, as religion would have us do, is to remove an entire dynamic from the human experience – and possibly condemn that aspect of ourselves to engage in a futile and mindless quest for satisfaction until it is reclaimed. Given that the same energy that goes into literal sexual activities, is also a component in many other, non-sexual areas of the human experience, the damage to humanity’s overall capacity to live, experience and create, cannot be overstated.

The Inertia of Enlightenment

Buddhism, and popular Western proponents of its ideals such as Eckhart Tolle, take the fragmentation of the Self to its end. Enlightenment, or “Nirvana,” the Pali term, means “blowing out” – i.e., the extinguishing of one’s individual, divine spark. Through a process of relinquishing all of its parts, one experiences the Self as nonexistent, and this is claimed to be the highest state to which one can attain.

Buddha observed that everything in the physical world is subject to impermanence and entropy, and artificially imposed this entropy on the Self in the attempt to dissolve it, therefore “ending suffering.” Through a process of relinquishing everything – thought, will, desire, love – all is stripped away to the point that there ceases to be any awareness of one’s Self as an autonomous, sovereign individual personality.

Achieving enlightenment is a bit like dismantling your car, throwing all its parts aside, in the search for the “True Car” within. Eventually you’ll find that there is no car, but that doesn’t mean the car has ceased to exist. It’s simply in pieces, scattered all over the general vicinity.

So it is with enlightenment. One removes everything that can be removed, leaving the physical body and conscious mind. You’ve got peace – but it’s the peace of death; entropy that has reached zero-point. You’ve got detachment – the literal detachment of all one’s parts from their centralized location in the 3D world. Scattered around your physical body at various points on the nonphysical spectrum are all your parts, who may care a bit more about what’s happening, but can’t do a damn thing about it. Desire-based aspects that either can’t fulfill themselves, or can do nothing but. Mobility with no direction. A navigator that can’t go anywhere. An interpreter and assigner of value that exists in a state of sensory deprivation. Passion without an object. And, more than likely, a Higher Self going “well, crap… lost another one to that whole ‘enlightenment’ fad.” One does indeed rid themselves of the part that is capable of suffering (and joy!) but that part simply continues to suffer, cut off from a mind that no longer has the capacity to notice or care.

I’m a bit more wary of Buddhism and all its derivatives than the Abrahamic religions, for a few reasons. The cultivation of siddhis, i.e. nonphysical sensing and metaphysical abilities, is strongly discouraged and viewed as a distraction on the path to enlightenment. Anything that might be seen or heard in meditation is dismissed as illusory and inconsequential. Read: all the skills and perceptive abilities you need to notice that all your ejected parts continue to exist just beyond your awareness, are ignored until the parts of you that make those perceptions possible are, themselves, relinquished.

Secondly, at least with the Abrahamic religions, once you decide to stop believing in them, you can change course and choose a different direction (assuming you don’t live in a place where doing so is still hazardous to your physical health). Your mind may be heavily conditioned, but it’s still largely intact. Your will may have been submitted, but you can pick it back up again. Your identity may have been conformed to an arbitrary ideal that has little to do with the expression of your authentic Self, but it’s still yours if you want it. Your sexual capacity may require extensive retrievals and emergency services to get it back into a healthy and functional state, but at least there’s enough of you left to make it happen.

As one gets closer to “enlightenment,” they get further and further away from a position where they could reintegrate their parts and attain wholeness, without great difficulty. In all my experience with reintegration – even unconscious reintegration – at the very least, there needs to be a desire to move in a direction that encourages one’s fragments to return. To achieve conscious reintegration, especially of parts unwilling or unable to return on their own, requires some combination of “siddhis,” mind, will, heart, desire and passion – all things that one who aspires to enlightenment aims to extinguish. In its quest to “get off the wheel,” Buddhism and its derivatives actually make a literal mess of the Self that may take many, many more incarnations to clean up. Even restarting that process may have to wait until enough fragments somehow find their way back to each other, to make for an at least semi-functional physical incarnation.

Good Cop, Bad Cop

It happens in many cases that people come to reject whichever Western religion they grew up in, only to embrace Buddhism, or some popular strain of New Age thought that has helped to propagate many of its precepts in the West. After all the striving to please a God for whom nothing ever quite measures up, Buddhism and its derivatives do seem like a much needed rest. Considering the effects that all those traditions actually have upon an individual soul however, it becomes apparent that for those in this position, they’re leaving behind the more overtly authoritarian face of one religion for another, seemingly more benign facade… which will effectively finish the job of destroying everything that makes us human before they’ve ever had a chance to fully experience themselves. While they will eventually get that chance, it will likely require traveling a long, hard road back to spiritual health and wholeness. Even if one stops and changes course somewhere along these paths of self-annihilation, there will still be heavy losses to one’s personal power and natural functions. Throw in the amnesia of a new incarnation that has returned to find its scattered parts, but has to go through the process of figuring out what it’s there for (which it may or may not!)… it becomes evident that we may be doing this for quite a while.

The Separation of Oneness

Due to its current popularity and the likelihood that most of my readers will have had at least some experience with it, the New Age doctrine of oneness deserves a mention. While striving to increase one’s ability to live in harmony is a worthy goal, this is not what actually happens in practice. Most people who emphasize the goal of “oneness with the cosmos,” are not one within themselves — and their methods for achieving the former ensures that the latter won’t happen. Rather than a collection of individuals who are able to express themselves, each in their own authentic way, in harmony and wholeness similar to the cells of a healthy body, most who value “oneness” try to get there by rejecting the “inconvenient” or otherwise not so nice parts of themselves in much the same way many religions would have us do. Personal boundaries are relinquished, causing one to embrace things as part of the Self that didn’t originate there, reject other parts that did, and still others simply drift away due to a lack of a consistent, well defined center that would provide a sense of inner cohesion. The most common conception of “oneness” is not a state of harmony within and without, but rather a sort of top-down, spiritual totalitarianism with a pleasant shiny veneer, where one’s value is recognized only in terms of contribution to a collective, and authentic individuality is discouraged to foster a false sense of civility. Same effect, slightly different packaging. More on the folly of many of the most popular New Age ideas can be found in my recent article on why I’m not a lightworker.

Given how much of the world population is and has historically professed membership in the religions that are the source of so much fragmentation, it is probably safe to say that anybody who’s incarnated a few times has spent some time in one or more of them, and thus may well have at least a few pieces missing. A future post will outline some of the ways for achieving spiritual rehabilitation and moving toward wholeness, in light of this. Now that we’ve seen some of the effects that the most common spiritual ideals have on the Self from a physical word perspective though, the next post in the series will shift our attention to the fragments themselves, and the well known paranormal and metaphysical phenomena that their existence may help to explain.

As I was writing the follow-up post in this series, it became evident that there were three “rules” governing how nonphysical fragments of the Self behave and function that kept coming up as I’d explore different aspects of how fragmentation itself ties into our experience of spirituality. So, I figured the information I’m presenting would be better organized and less redundant if I expand the series and give these rules their own post.

1. Fragmented aspects do not degrade or dissolve. If anything they increase in coherency and complexity.

It seems to be the common sense view that things we “release” simply evaporate; even that they were never “real” to begin with. In reality these are released pieces of the self, which continue to exist, separated from the conscious mind, and non-local relative to the body. If they are substantial enough to be capable of it, they will continue to move through their environment, having experiences and gathering information. If they are not mobile or aware enough, such as a fragment of a chakra for instance, they will simply remain stuck in limbo until they are found and re-integrated with their soul of origin – or join with another fragment of the same soul that provides enough mobility for both to move and act. In either case, soul fragments do not appear to be subject to entropy, and do not dissolve or decrease in their form and function over time in any way. The fragment that is reintegrated will be essentially the same one that was lost, plus any experience it has managed to gather on its own.

2. All parts of you will express themselves – with or without your awareness.

Often the parts of us that fragment are aspects of ourselves we’ve rejected for reasons having to do with the fact that they don’t “fit” with the socially acceptable face we feel obligated to put forward, or the expectations others have of us. Psychic abilities, “inconvenient” emotions, fears, desires, all examples of things that can end up being squashed down because they do not fit with some arbitrary definition of “The Way Things Should Be.” We repress these parts of ourselves until they eventually seem to disappear, and in many cases this is called “maturity.”

But these aspects of ourselves don’t disappear, and cutting off parts of the self is not maturity. These aspects continue to express themselves in one of three main ways. They either become part of our Shadow which stays with us in the form of unconscious personality flaws. Or, they can manifest in the form of health issues and undesirable patterns in life circumstances. Lastly, they can split off to express themselves apart from the physical body and conscious mind, as essentially autonomous entities – and the self that resides with the physical body and conscious mind loses their functions, and thus part of its power. If you’re in the habit of repressing your dreams and desires rather than acting on them for instance, then the part of yourself capable of fulfilling them will eventually split off to satisfy itself easily in the astral, while you increasingly lose the power to manifest, create, or even retain an active influence in your own experience in the physical world. Unfortunately in some cases it is not so simple as one day deciding to completely change course and expecting life to change accordingly. While the will to change may cause a swift and spontaneous reintegration, if it does not, then reintegration will still need to be achieved somehow in order to gain the necessary momentum and support for one’s chosen path to be successful.

Being true to yourself isn’t just a mark of integrity – it’s the way to remain whole.

3. Soul fragments are irreplaceable; the Self is irreducible.

Early on when I realized there were substantial parts of myself that had fragmented (and hadn’t fully come to terms with the truth of rule #1), I experimented with the idea of simply having them recreated by my Higher Self who, I theorized, should have the “blueprint” for everything I came in with. Despite having an increasingly strong working connection with my HS, that approach was never successful. It has become evident over time that the only way to heal an issue caused by the fragmentation of part of the Self, is for the part to return, or be brought back, to its Self of origin. In keeping with this there are many longstanding issues I had been trying to come up with a way to heal for years, which have been restored immediately upon the return of a missing fragment.

Since some of these functions had been missing for as long as I’ve been alive, I currently suspect this is one of the reasons we reincarnate. If pieces of the Self are fragmented here in the 3D world and its surrounding nonphysical planes, I would argue that the Higher Self may be unwilling or unable to leave Earth behind until all parts of itself are accounted for and reconnected with itself. My experiences connecting with the consciousness of this planet have given me even more reason to think that in order to stop incarnating, one needs to fully reintegrate the parts they’ve left behind throughout the incarnative cycle. This is more speculative on my part, but it would not surprise me if “cleaning up your own mess” from Earth and its surrounding planes was one of the agreements we made upon incarnating here.

Keeping these three rules in mind, I’ll pick it up in the next post with an exploration of how the definition of “spiritual achievement” in most religions may serve to keep us from doing the very thing they aim for – the liberation of the Self.

Soul Fragmentation Explained (Part 1)

Soul Fragmentation Series

4. Soul Fragmentation, Neg Interference and the Paranormal
5. The Law of Attraction and the Mobile Soul

Soul retrieval is a concept that comes to us from Shamanic traditions around the world. According to this school of thought, as well as my personal experience, it is possible for nonphysical fragments of a person to become separated from the whole. I have additionally come to suspect that this basic phenomenon accounts for many of the other concepts common to spirituality and metaphysics. In this series I will be explaining the concept of soul fragmentation and recounting some personal experience; following posts will explain the theory I’ve developed based on the implications. Note that I use the term “soul” only for the sake of familiarity — in reality, what people are talking about when they refer to the “soul,” and the parts of the self capable of fragmenting, may or may not be the same thing. So, don’t get hung up on terminology. ;)

We typically think of ourselves as separate individuals – completely distinct from others, and a single unified whole within ourselves. The reality is decidedly more complex. The ego, or conscious mind with all its conditioning is our socially acceptable “face,” the part of ourselves that perceives itself in the way that we’re most familiar with. But behind every ego lies a subconscious mind, made up of an entire cast of character. Personal archetypes, past aspects of the self, our shadow aspects and even influences from other lives are just a few of the parts of us that make up who we are, usually below the level of our conscious awareness. While elaborating much further on the anatomy of the subconscious mind is beyond the scope of this article, suffice to say that you’re a much more diverse bunch than you may have ever imagined.

If expanding your self-concept into a group effort isn’t making your head spin already, let me go one better. Many of these aspects are capable, to varying degrees, of operating independently of your awareness, and each other, within or outside the area of the physical body. We humans don’t just exist on the physical plane – we are multidimensional. Most of us keep the bulk of our awareness trained on the physical world the majority of the time, but in reality, parts of ourselves exist and operate on a variety of “frequencies,” perceiving from a range of perspectives and environments spanning a spectrum from physical to nonphysical. Expanding our perception to encompass an increasingly broad range of these aspects of ourselves is a big part of what it means to advance spiritually – though the importance of remaining grounded and centered in this reality, while becoming aware of others, so we don’t lose ourselves, cannot be overstated.

Reasons for Fragmentation

The most commonly known cause of soul fragmentation is trauma. During such an event, it is common for a part of the self to split off in order to avoid suffering, and either go its own way, or remain, but in a dissonant state where it keeps replaying the original event, causing disruption in the present. (A technique for resolving situations where the traumatized or otherwise dissonant aspect remains “local” was discussed in a previous article.) It is my opinion that this is the most commonly known cause because it causes the largest pieces to fragment – in other words, if a very painful event causes part of yourself to leave, then it’s probably going to be a significant enough part that takes a few functions with it. Generally someone in this position ends up with a sense that “something is missing” or that they were “never the same afterward.”

Another reason part of the self might split off is “permission” has been granted for it to either leave or be taken away, although at the time it is rarely, if ever, recognized that this is what has taken place. There are many ways that we give our personal power away in even the most seemingly innocuous daily interactions for instance – in some of those cases, part of the self goes with it. If part of the self is viewed as being sinful, problematic, the source of pain or is otherwise rejected or repressed, it will likely either become part of one’s Shadow and continue expressing itself in unhealthy ways, or simply leave in hopes of expressing itself more freely. Given the prevalence of influences that label parts of ourselves as “wrong,” this is likely a much more common, yet less recognized, source of fragmentation.

I have recognized the tendency of religion and psychology to have us “release” the things that trouble us as another potential source of fragmentation. Angry? Need closure? Holding a grudge? Release, release, release. The perception seems to be that we’re just releasing our “feelings” which evaporate into the ether — and it does make us feel better. Problem solved, right? Well, this may at times be the case, though often what we’re “releasing” is a semi-aware part of the self, which consists almost solely of the related issue; a fragment made of anger with a singleminded need for resolution, for instance. With little direction except that its been “released,” worst case scenario is that it takes itself out on the party in question, resulting in a form of psychic attack. If not though, it will likely just become one of the many aimlessly wandering and potentially hostile denizens of the astral plane. This possibility makes it worth considering a new approach to “release,” which I will elaborate on below.

My Experiences

I can thank a few unhealthy coping mechanisms for providing me with much of the material for this article. While I did have some instances of fragmentation that were likely caused by events outside my control, most of my own experiences were unknowingly self-inflicted. In early adolescence and on into the teenage years, I fell into a destructive pattern of locking down many parts of myself, in a process that got to be routine. If I felt that part of me was being attacked, or even if I had desires I was unable to meet, I would simply shut down the part of myself that was experiencing the discomfort. In some cases I would refuse to express part of myself – and that part, not particularly wanting to be shut down, would simply leave to find expression elsewhere.

Mistakenly believing that there was no “true self,” that I could just shut off or change parts of myself at will (and turn them back on just as easily) – I ended up with parts of myself scattered all over various planes, while what was left, local to my physical body, ended up losing much of its personal power and function. When I would come around and want to turn these functions back on again, I would find it wasn’t quite that easy – because they weren’t there to be turned on.

While I take responsibility for the poor, albeit uninformed choices I made that led to much of my fragmentation, at least part of this process was instigated by the negative interference I was subjected to during the same period. Eventually things got to be a bit too systematic, almost as if something was going down a checklist of my functions, and prompting me to split them off, in a process whose order and triggers were getting increasingly, and chillingly efficient.

In hindsight the pattern seemed to be that part of myself would split off, and an etheric implant would be inserted in its place, to prevent the return of the fragment, as well as encouraging further dysfunction, isolation and fragmentation. By the time I began the process of spiritual awakening, complete with budding 3rd eye phenomena that was intriguing and even fun, this process of shutting down and fragmentation had become subconscious and automatic. This unfortunately meant that when the audio and visuals turned overtly threatening, my higher spiritual and intuitive functions were shut down and split of about as quickly as they appeared. Most of my subsequent development has thus focused on putting Humpty Dumpty back together again; reassembling myself, and regaining abilities I had to begin with. Through a process of removing harmful implanted constructs, finding and reintegrating parts of myself, I have restored a great deal of those functions – including spontaneously regaining “normal” abilities most people take for granted, that I’d never previously had use of in this lifetime. I elaborated more on this side of things in a previous article.

Reintegration

Most shamanic sources portray soul retrieval as something that requires intervention by someone qualified, which often involves a lot of negotiation with either the fragment or another entity that has assumed control of it. However, it has been my experience that most fragments will return on their own under the right conditions. Adopting a policy of unconditional acceptance of all parts of myself brought back a lot of the parts that left due to various forms of rejection, for instance. That said, I have had cases that were more involved. Some fragments lacked either the mobility, the awareness, or both, to find their way back; others were actively prevented from doing so by various types of interference. Once I recognized self-fragmentation as a legitimate concept and one that applied to myself though, I adopted a firm resolve that all parts that originated with me, would return to me, and I suspect that this alone helped a lot in facilitating their actual return through various means.

Reintegration has provided an even more surreal set of experiences than the fragmentation that necessitated it. Starting at age 18, I would occasionally have what I began calling a “memory dump” before I knew anything about what was actually happening. Most often I would be hit by a sudden flood of dreamlike imagery and impressions (from dreams I didn’t remember having), memories that didn’t come from myself (at least not the self I’m most familiar with!), and all of this would be followed by deja vu lasting five minutes or more. Sometimes the deja vu would occur without the “memory dump,” and vice versa, but when those subsided it would always be followed by a powerful feeling of heightened clarity, and energy surges through my body.

As I got older and more spiritually aware, I began to piece together what was really going on and took steps to refine the process deliberately. Increasing my own intuitive abilities and energy sensitivity, as well as connecting with friends who were engaged in similar metaphysical pursuits, resulted in a few instances of being able to engage, and interact to varying degrees, with these aspects of myself before they integrated with the rest of me. In several instances, at least one of those aspects proved capable of physical interaction apart from my conscious awareness. In separate incidents it visited, and surprised the hell out of a few friends of mine, in the middle of the day. They were aware enough to perceive that it was “me,” though I wasn’t consciously aware of any of this until they told me later. Fortunately everybody it interacted with that I was aware of, agreed that it was good natured, well mannered and respectful of boundaries… if rather uninhibited when permitted to be, ahem. (It was associated with my base chakra, which was likely why it could interact easily with the physical; do the math, people. ;) ) Finally this aspect visited Gehenna, and she was able to help me reconnect with it and convince it to reintegrate… possibly reluctantly so on both their parts. Cough.

As my ability to perceive non-local aspects of myself has increased, I have taken measures to integrate their memories and perceptions in a more orderly fashion, in order to make at least some sense of what’s incoming. Those who have read material by the author Robert Bruce will be familiar with the concept of memory download. For those who aren’t, the basic idea is that if two parts of the self have recorded separate sets of memories for the same time period, and then the nonphysical aspect attempts to reintegrate with the physical set of memories, much of the nonphysical memories will likely be lost. This explains, for instance, why memories of dreams and astral projection can be so hit-or-miss. I believe it also explains why my early experiences of “memory dump” were so disjointed and fleeting.

Through some internal reorganizing I have designated a part of myself to receive the incoming memories of reintegrating aspects so that they’re not being overwritten by anything else, and so they will be downloaded and organized in a way that I can perceive more of the information content. This has led to much smoother reintegration experiences and much intuitive insight on things like the cause of the original fragmentation, what the aspect has been up to in the meantime, and how I can help it to get re-oriented and brought up to speed with the rest of me. Two of such experience stand out enough to be worth a mention.

In the first, I felt for a few days that an aspect was “circling the drain” and preparing to reintegrate, so I simply allowed it to happen, which it did. I felt the familiar reintegration symptoms, but then a very distinct and pronounced sense of disorientation. I clearly intuited that this was an aspect that had been apart from myself since some time during my teenage years, a very different person living in southern California. From his perspective, he suddenly woke up, not only years older with a completely different personality, but on another continent! For a short time this aspect was very prominently in the front of my awareness, going “Where am I? How’d I get here? What’s going on?” …and I literally had to sit there, mentally reminding myself of the course of events that had brought me to that point, because for a few minutes, the rest of my scrambled brain wasn’t entirely sure either!

The second instance will be getting its own article before long, but there was another aspect of myself that had been unconsciously ejected for remaining antagonistic, once I decided to start treating myself a lot better than I had been. It was operating with the belief that “no-win situations build character” – and trying to make this maxim encompass my entire life’s experience. Where this aspect got this idea remains unclear, though before I learned how to establish and enforce personal boundaries, it continued to use its increasingly limited access to invite all manner of negative interference, and re-align other aspects of myself toward its own destructive agenda. Needless to say it did not ultimately succeed, and after finally figuring out that this was what was happening, a battle of wills brought this aspect to the point of nonresistance where it could be re-aligned with the rest of my values and ethics, and successfully integrated. That makes it sound more epic than the situation actually was though – by the time I figured out what was happening, it was this single aspect against all my others that had already re-integrated more easily, so it wasn’t much of a “battle.” When I finally got it to integrate, I had an intuitive download that was as extensive as it was unnerving, followed by a roughly ten minute preview of everything happening in the room I was sitting in, about ten seconds in advance.

The Mobile Multidimensional Self

While the fragmentation scenarios I’ve discussed until now have been the result of traumatic or otherwise unhealthy circumstances, thankfully that is not the whole story. Under ideal conditions, aspects of the self come and go for a variety of reasons, relative to the physical body, on a fairly regular basis. Unlike a fragmentation scenario though, these traveling aspects maintain a connection to the rest of the Self, through which energy and information is exchanged. The degree to which the conscious mind is aware of this exchange accounts for a lot of the mechanics behind much of the most common intuitive and psychic phenomena.

In light of newfound understanding of what happens when we “release” things, I have also developed my own approach to this practice. I still release dissonant parts of myself to find their resolution (assuming there’s a good reason why it can’t just be talked through the old fashioned way) — but with clear instructions. Rather than the nebulous objective of “release” being an end in itself, my objective is that they resolve in a way that brings them back in harmony with my mission statement, and then return. I then send them to work themselves out on a “dreamscape” part of the astral plane, where they can cycle through as many different approaches to the issue as needed, until they’re realigned with the rest of myself. In this way I avoid unleashing pissed off self aspects on unsuspecting people, they resolve themselves without occupying much more of my thoughts and energy, and often they bring back a bit of newly acquired self-knowledge from the experience of cycling through many different approaches to the issue in question. Pretty good deal, methinks. I recommend this approach strongly; it doesn’t require much “technique” other than setting clear intent for what happens after you release something, and then achieving the release via whatever method you’re comfortable with.

This is just one of many examples of how I’ve come to use the mechanics of the multidimensional self in ways that are constructive and beneficial to myself and others. My work in this area has also taken me to a new level of understanding of many of the most common spiritual and religious concepts. This has illuminated a fresh approach to some, and has framed others in a way that is decidedly unflattering. I’ll pick it up there in my next post.

Ego: A Hot Commodity for Higher Selves?

I have come to strongly suspect that we (some of us anyway) incarnate here on earth, not to lose ego, but to gain it.

Hear me out.

The ideal of many is to let the conscious mind, and thus “ego,” die out, so that we’re living completely “in the flow”; just letting life happen without resistance, authentically, spontaneously, unconsciously, all the time. There’s certainly a lot to be said for being able to live in the flow. I experience it most readily while creating art, where I enter that peak state in which no conscious thought is required; where it would be more accurate to say the drawing or painting is happening through me. I’m even in the process of integrating that state into many more areas of my life so I can enter into it at will. But while that would be good to be able to do most of the time… would I want it ALL the time? No, I wouldn’t. Why?

Because extinguishing the conscious mind prohibits us from evolving consciously.

I submit that the much maligned ego is the source of conscious, self-directed evolution. The subconscious mind has the capacity to absorb information from the universe in raw, abstract form… but without a conscious mind to bring it into form, it stays abstract, and manifests as a force of evolution which acts ON things rather than through them. This is a slow process, and not very conducive to innovation… essentially you just get more variations of the same until that information has been combined in every way possible under the circumstances, and then new pieces of information introduce both new circumstances and new phases of evolution.

When you’ve got a conscious mind, the capacity to imagine, observe, interpret and plan, this process can be both much faster and self-directed. At the individual level, we can come here and observe a wide range of things that we had no frame of reference for before. We can imagine things that don’t currently exist, and create planning strategies to bring them into being, until one of those strategies realizes our vision or close to it — in short, we can innovate. We can also observe other beings who are doing or being something that we are not, and learn that capacity from them in various ways, without having to reinvent the wheel from scratch.

I personally value the ability to learn and integrate new skills and experiences, and to constantly refine, expand and make changes to my sense of self. To do or be something completely new, that I have no prior frame of reference for, requires a degree of conscious thought. To take something completely foreign, and integrate it comfortably into my existing framework, requires the presence of ego… first to figure out how to make room for the new within the framework of the old, and then to become proficient in it so it becomes part of the Flow. What I said above about entering the Flow while creating art wasn’t always the case for instance — it was a learned skill that originally required the input of my ego. The process is the same when learning any new skill. First you learn the basic, rudimentary set of actions that are required, and utilize a lot of conscious thought in order to memorize and perform them all at the same time. Then you get to the point where you can perform them all without thinking about it so much, but still need to practice; efforts at this stage are still a bit clumsy and unsure. Finally, the new skill integrates into a unified whole, and passes into the subconscious mind, where it becomes “second nature” and can operate automatically without conscious input.

In all my experience with nonphysical beings – there have been very few who seem able to do that. On the astral plane, what you experience, is who you are, is what you do, is what you experience – in other words, your environment immediately reflects and responds to who you are and what influences are contained within you. All negative entities are certainly acting spontaneously and authentically for instance… but could a neg one day decide not to be a neg? I highly doubt it, because their entire experience likely reinforces what they are, and they don’t have the ability to step back, and consciously decide to try something new for a while.

Sure, there are highly intelligent nonphysical beings capable of impressive and seemingly well-planned feats. However, this is easily accounted for due to the way the subconscious mind functions. Without the conscious mind to exercise critical thought, accepting some input and rejecting others, the subconscious simply sucks up everything it is exposed to and acts out of the sum total of what it has absorbed. It can evolve — which is to say that it can take what it has absorbed and combine it in new ways for greater effectiveness; even improve its own processing ability. But it’s still limited to available info, and what it has a prior frame of reference for, which is highly dependent on the environment… which it’s creating or attracting based on what it absorbs. You see the dilemma here. Nonphysical and non-sentient physical beings can evolve, but it would probably be more accurate to say that evolution happens TO them. They don’t make choices per se; they simply attract, and react. Some of the more evolved beings can “calculate” in the sense that a computer calculates — they take the information they already have available and can combine it in all the ways that it can be combined. The ones who have been absorbing and combining the longest, and whose processing speed and storage capacity has been improved upon over the eons, are the “higher ups” of the nonphysical. This would explain the “machine-like intelligence” or otherwise semi-conscious, automatic behavior that many have reported in their dealings with various nonphysical entities.

Consider that when we actually like who we are and what we’re experiencing, acting spontaneously is called “being in the flow” — but when we don’t, it’s called “being reactive.” But is there really any fundamental difference, other than personal preference? Being “authentic” is all well and good if you like who you are and where it’s taking you… but if you don’t?

Well, you might incarnate here, to escape yourself.

In this place, and probably other places like it, you will invariably be surrounded by examples of beings who are NOT like yourself. In order for the subconscious mind to thrive in such an environment, you create an ego, which can act as the guardian of the subconscious, to choose what it is absorbing, and to seek out novel information for it to take onboard. When I’m dissatisfied with my own patterns or lack of skill in a given area for instance, the first thing I do is find someone who’s proficient in a way I’d like to be, figure out how they got there, and what the difference is between them and myself. For best results I’ve found that this requires cooperation between the thinking ego AND the purely reactive, processing, subconscious mind. Granted, most peoples egos aren’t actually doing that — the done-thing on planet earth is to have the ego not only thinking “I am thy God, before me there are no other,” but asleep at the gate and letting the subconscious absorb whatever dissonant and contradictory information advertisers want to pump in there – which, in turn, leads to the well documented “polluted” and chaotic expression of the ego.

Incarnating is, of course, a double edged sword. You might incarnate here originally to change your fundamental alignment in a place where it’s possible to do so deliberately… but unfortunately you will also pick up things you’d be better off without. Then you die, lose your ego, the imbalances and falsehoods you’ve picked up get you bounced around various nonphysical planes like a pingpong ball with no way to change your trajectory, or otherwise stuck in a very limited, self-generated environment with no way to move very far. As authors like Bruce Moen and Robert Monroe attest, the nonphysical planes are full of beings who are stuck in a state of flow that isn’t flowing anywhere particularly enjoyable – or escapable – without eventually being shuffled into another earth incarnation.

Considering all that I’ve personally witnessed, and what many sources (particularly of the Gnostic variety) have to say about this system being a self-perpetuating, energy farming machine, it would not surprise me in the least if the those that are pumping our egos full of destructive programming, and the ones telling us the ego itself is the problem to be relinquished, are “serving the same master,” so to speak. Good cop, bad cop, problem-reaction-solution, wash rinse repeat, and so it goes…

…Until you figure out how to take command of this ego-self, and use it for what it’s good for, which is a tool for consciously choosing in which direction you evolve. While many people are trying to dissolve the ego, I can’t help but wonder if at least some Higher Selves are trying to figure a way to incorporate it, to transmute and integrate it into something sustainable before it dissolves at the death of another incarnation, in order to grant them a degree of freedom they didn’t have even with all their impressive capabilities. That is, the freedom to radically shift gears and try something new and unprecedented at will, without having to send parts of themselves into physical incarnation to do it.
